Filipino BBQ Throwdown 2025: A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Culinary Excellence

Thank you, San Antonio!
On June 15, 2025, the Filipino BBQ Throwdown Street Food Fest brought nearly 500 guests together at Kain-Na Filipino Cuisine for an unforgettable day of food, family, and Filipino pride. Hosted by the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce-Greater San Antonio (PACC-GSA), this year’s festival was a vibrant showcase of heritage, unity, and culinary creativity.

Honoring Heritage and Community

The festival opened with a powerful tribute: the United States Congressional Gold Medal was posthumously awarded to SSG Venancio Jarin Penano, a Filipino WWII veteran, in a heartfelt ceremony led by Ret. USAF Col. Nonie Cabana. This moment set the tone for a day filled with pride and remembrance.

We were honored to welcome Mayor-elect Gina Ortiz Jones, who joined the festivities, sampled Filipino BBQ, and recognized the importance of Father’s Day, Philippine Independence Day, and Pride Month. Her historic presence underscored our commitment to inclusion and community.

Former District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda was also recognized with honorary lifetime membership for her dedication to the Filipino community.

BBQ Competition, Food, and Fun

Guests enjoyed stirring renditions of the Philippine and American national anthems, live BBQ demos featuring Mama Sita’s products, and a lively community cake-cutting. The heart of the event was the BBQ Throwdown 3.0 competition, where local grillmasters wowed the crowd:

  • 1st Place: Jenny Mccray

  • 2nd Place: Jenny Mccray

  • 3rd Place: Eric Anderson

Heartwarming Father’s Day stories, a successful raffle, and family-friendly activities rounded out the day. The festival was expertly emceed by Shenel Rimando, keeping energy high and the program seamless.
